Second-class petty officers Dalton Taylor and Chris Ingram have been best friends since coxswain's school. Now they're stationed together in the harbor patrol unit of NAS Adams. They're content as friends, but secretly, they both ache for more. Neither makes a move, though; while Dalton is out and proud, Chris is closeted — even from his best friend.

Then another coxswain's negligence nearly drowns Dalton. After a taste of how easily they could lose each other, neither man can keep his feelings hidden anymore, and it turns out love and sex come easy when you're falling for your best friend.

Things aren't just heating up between the friends-turned-lovers, though. The Navy is investigating the accident, and the harbor patrol chief isn't going to let his star coxswain go down for dereliction of duty, even if saving him means throwing Dalton under the bus.

As the threats and gaslighting pile up, Chris and Dalton need each other more than ever — as shipmates, friends, and lovers. But if their chief prevails, the only way they can save their careers is to let each other go.

Witt smartly mixes military politics and hot love scenes in this sizzling, heartfelt contemporary, the fifth in her Anchor Point military series (after Rank & File). Openly gay second-class petty officer (or, in Navy lingo, MA2) Dalton Taylor fell in love with his best friend, MA2 Chris Ingram, when they met at the Navy’s coxswain school. But Chris is straight—or is he? After Dalton is in a horrific accident, Chris stays by his side, nursing him through his physical and emotional wounds, and finally he tells Dalton that he, too, is gay. A sweet friends-to-lovers relationship soon begins. But some throwback Navy men didn’t get the memo that gay sailors are allowed to be open about it, and one of the worst is Dalton and Chris’s obnoxious, biased boss, Chief Lasby. When Lasby threatens Dalton and Chris, they have a choice to make: let Lasby break them apart, or fight for what’s right at the possible risk of their careers. In the end, karma satisfyingly dishes up just deserts. Past protagonists also appear, making for a fun reunion. Witt’s smart, sexy story will appeal to romance readers of any gender.

Romance blooms between two male naval officers after one survives a terrifying accident at sea.The fifth book in Witt's (Reckless Behavior, 2017, etc.) Anchor Point series is a friends-to-lovers romance between second-class petty officers Dalton Taylor and Chris Ingram. Stationed at NAS Adams in Anchor Point, a small town on the northern coast of Oregon, Dalton and Chris are close friends who become closer after an accident on the water nearly takes Dalton's life. Dalton is out and proud while Chris is closeted, but neither acts on their hidden mutual attraction until Chris nurses Dalton back to health. Dalton's traumatic brain injury and PTSD render his recovery uncertain and arduous but don't diminish the joy he finds with his new lover. In Witt's typical style, several spicy sex scenes are bookended by affectionate embraces and emotional conversations. As Chris and Dalton revel in their new romance, trouble looms in the form of interference in the Navy's investigation of the incident by a homophobic harbor chief who hopes to frame Dalton for negligence. Witt's command of the details of life in the Navy helps convey the high stakes for both men of their romance, even years after the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Chris and Dalton's triumph over external threats to their careers and relationship from bigoted rivals and superiors creates more interest than their nearly frictionless romance. Works well as a stand-alone novel, although the appearance of characters from prior books in the series will please fans.A solid tale set in a sharply drawn military milieu.
