Gr 3-6-A short, philosophical story, written in verse, that can be appreciated by a wide audience. A king is accidentally released from his historical portrait, finding himself in the modern world. He has to deal with today's problems; he joins a circus to earn his living and goes to jail because of a misunderstanding. He gets out of prison and continues his existence as a common fellow. When he has the opportunity to become a king again, he chooses to live an ordinary life instead. Primitive black-and-white drawings appear throughout the rhythmic stanzas. Sophisticated in theme, the story is straightforward and entertaining enough for younger children. Older readers will appreciate the king's sense of humor and strength of will. An appealing selection with a positive message.-Judith Rodriguez, NYPL
